ABOUT
Since Africa Leadership School (ALS) began in 1999, we have become increasingly aware of the strategic missional importance of cities in fulfilling the great commission outlined in Matt 28:18 – 20.
The cities of Africa are currently experiencing explosive numerical and gospel growth, which necessitates local leaders receiving ongoing gospel centred training and resourcing. This led to the creation of 5 ALS modules to help strengthen gospel foundations, equip and mobilize leaders. This training is applied through discipleship groups with a missional focus.
CRAIG BOTHA
AFRICA LEADERSHIP SCHOOL
As a young pastor in 1985 I also came to know and appreciate the late Dr Michael Eaton who also became a ‘spiritual father and mentor’ to me for over 30 years. During that time Michael regularly visited our church, Grace Generation in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa and his visits had a significant impact on the city with his outstanding prophetic teaching gift. It was out of this relationship that the ‘The Whole Counsel of God’ teachings based on Acts 20:27, developed as a major resource alongside the other training modules. We believe these training resources continue Michael's legacy as a man uniquely equipped to impact this continent and future generation of leaders.
Changing times
The onset of Covid in 2020 necessitated a few friends to rethink gospel growth in a rapidly changing, complex and volatile cultural and political global landscape.
Marius Gradwell of Energeia Ministries and apostolic partner in this gospel task, has pointed out that
2 Kings 2:19-22 has been very instructive in this regard:
“Now the men of the city said to Elisha, “Behold, the situation of this city is pleasant, as my lord sees, but the water is bad, and the land is unfruitful.” He said, “Bring me a new bowl, and put salt in it.” So they brought it to him. Then he went to the spring of water and threw salt in it and said, “Thus says the Lord, I have healed this water; from now on neither death nor miscarriage shall come from it.” So the water has been healed to this day, according to the word that Elisha spoke.”
ESSENTIALS
Three things are essential from the passage above.
A NEW BOWL
A new bowl – a new wineskin is needed. The church needs to embrace new ways of doing things to produce disciples and churches on the rapidly urbanising African continent.
SALT / THE GOSPEL
We desperately need salt - the gospel of Jesus Christ like salt is the power of God that brings true salvation and ongoing transformation.
APPLICATION
The Gospel must be applied to the source - the water producing spring... i.e., strategic places where leaders are shaped and influenced, impacting the church and surrounding culture.
KEY AREAS
In response ALS seeks to resource, equip, and help mobilise existing churches and leaders in three key areas:
Training & Discipleship
There are currently 5 training modules in print, and electronic format supplemented with Dr Michael Eaton's outstanding Bible resources.
Resources & Equipping
We use Dr Michael Eaton's Bible commentaries (Preaching though the Bible) and systematic theology (the Plan and Purpose of God) in print, digital and audio format, and other audio leadership resources.
Leadership & Church Planting
We are engaged in the gathering and training of city leaders at a given location for gospel advance, church planting and marketplace impact.
